We are excited to accommodate a volunteer service project with the Rotary Club of Upcountry Maui. We are actively restoring an ancient ecosystem that has been degraded over time. Weʻve planted 27,000 native plants at this site over the past 20 years thanks to support of donors and volunteers. This is an incredible experience for volunteers to participate in ecological restoration for the benefit of future generations. We are a charitable program of Na Koa Manu Conservation 501c-3. We do accept tax-deductible donations of any amount which helps pay for the native plants, site preparation, and staffing for the volunteer trip, and long-term care and maintenance of our native plants. This has helped us make essential strides toward resiliency of our restoration efforts. Thanks to these monumental efforts, we have been attracting rare native honeycreeper forest birds whoʻve taken refuge in our sanctuary forest. This has been an amazing journey and we can not do it without our collaborative partnerships and generous donors. Plan for 3 hours on site for volunteer trip.
Our Meeting point is at the Skyline Hawaii Haleakala Zipline Tour and Maui Tea Farm. Location is 18303 Haleakala HWY, Kula HI 96790. Sometimes the address in GPS programs takes you 20 minutes beyond our location into Haleakala National PArk. If you type in Maui Tea Farm in GPS it is accurate most of the time.
Close toe shoes are required. It does get hot and sunny. But can also get chilly and misty if the clouds come down. We are located at 4,000 ft elevation with amazing bi-coastal views, the weather can shift dramatically throughout the day.
We will provide fresh drinking water. Volunteers should bring any food or snacks. We do have pavilions on site with picnic tables available |

Were you aware that right here in Makawao we have a boutique coffee plantation and roaster? For over 20 years, Maui Mountain Homegrown Coffee has been producing small batch coffee. Maui Mountain HomeGrown is environmentally friendly, no herbicides or pesticides have been used on the farm in over twenty years. Farm owner and operator Bobbi Becker will join us to tell the story of the farm, the growing process and the roasting. Come learn about this upcountry small business.

Please join us as we get to work assisting in the cleanup and restoration of the Kula burn area. We'll be working with Malama Kula, a recent recipient of a Maui Fire Relief Fund grant from Rotary District 5000. For the work day on the we’ll likely be focusing on re-planting native vegetation, (likely vetiver plants, which help with erosion and soil retention along ridge lines), wood chip scattering, and/or pulling invasive plants like nettle. We’ll cater the activities to the physical ability levels of the people choosing to attend (so no worries—nothing will be too hard!) Participants will want to bring clothes and equipment for working outdoors: • Closed toed shoes You're also welcome to bring gloves from home, although we have plenty to use if you don’t have your own. We'll meet at the Kula Marketplace at 8:30 am, in the parking area. Please email us to let us know you'll be joining us: upcountryrotary@gmail.com |
