Our Partnership with Skyline Conservation: Preserving Maui's Natural Beauty

The Rotary Club of Upcountry Maui is proud to partner with Skyline Hawaii's Conservation Initiative, a leading force in preserving and restoring Hawaii's precious natural resources. Their dedication to our ‘āina (land) perfectly aligns with Rotary's commitment to protecting the environment and supporting our local community.

Skyline Hawaii's Commitment to Conservation

Skyline Hawaii is driven by a deep love for the islands and a mission to conserve their stunning beauty for future generations, summarized by their mantra: "Do Good. Have Fun." Since its inception, conservation has been an integral part of their operations.

Their key conservation efforts include:

  • Extensive Reforestation: Since 2002, Skyline Hawaii has undertaken ambitious reforestation projects, planting over 20,000 native trees and plants. A significant portion of this work focuses on Pōhakuokalā Gulch in Kula, Maui, where they methodically remove invasive Eucalyptus trees (which are water-hungry and harmful to endemic birds) and reintroduce 38 species of native trees, shrubs, vines, and ferns, creating a sanctuary forest.
  • Carbon Neutrality: Demonstrating a commitment to sustainable practices, Skyline Hawaii has been a 100% carbon-neutral company since 2006, working with partners like carbonfund.org to reduce and offset their carbon footprint.
  • Significant Philanthropy: As the first zipline operator in the world to join 1% for the Planet, Skyline Hawaii donates at least 1% of all sales back to environmental conservation. They have given over $1.8 million to environmental and community nonprofits.
  • Community Engagement: Beyond large-scale projects, they actively host and participate in community reforestation and ocean cleanup events, engaging volunteers in hands-on conservation. They also contribute to food security, having donated over 85,000 pounds of food to local food banks.

Our Collaborative Efforts

Once a quarter, the Rotary Club of Upcountry Maui joins the Skyline Conservation Initiative for hands-on reforestation and other environmental projects. Our members volunteer their time to plant native trees and contribute to conservation efforts, helping to restore vital ecosystems on the slopes of Haleakalā.

This partnership allows us to directly contribute to the ecological health of Maui, ensuring that its unique biodiversity and natural beauty thrive for generations to come. Through this impactful collaboration, we are collectively working towards a greener, more resilient Upcountry Maui, demonstrating our shared dedication to environmental stewardship and community well-being.
